Chapter 2, Page 1

"Good luck on today's tandem flight, Suzy. You'll be flying with Scott Brossfield." The clerk nodded toward the door. "The best hang-glider instructor and pilot in the country. He holds several state and national records."

"If he's so good, why is he teaching?" Suzy asked Katharine.

"Scott says if you want to really know something, teach it," Katharine replied.

"Anything else?" Suzy asked.

"He's quiet. Nice most of the time. Could use some charm school."

Suzy Barnett and Katharine Webb walked outside and saw Scott on the launch pad.

"He has a strong, masculine silhouette," Suzy said.

Scott stood in the chilly morning air, wearing shorts. He sipped his herbal tea, and a cloud of moisture came from his mouth as he exhaled. A colorful glider sat perched at the edge of the ramp, 1,300 feet above the mile-distant landing zone. The view from launch to the landing zone made the hangars appear as white dots on the green valley. Scott picked up the tail of the glider and held it high over his head.

"Clear!" the pilot yelled.

The wiremen immediately let go, and the pilot leaped over the edge. Scott held the tail above his head as he chased the glider until the tips of his sneakers hung over the ramp, let go, and then stepped back to sip his tea and watch the glider soar. I wish Amber were here with me, instead of up there.

Suzy and Katharine walked over to the launch ramp. "Scott, I'd like to introduce you to my friend, Suzy. I just gave her a gift of a tandem flight."

"Well, you picked a great day for one," Scott said. "Perfect flying weather."

"Yeah, great," Suzy said, biting her lip.

"Have you flown before?"

"No."

"Are you afraid of heights?"

"Not really. Although I can't believe I'm about to jump off a perfectly good mountain."

"Look at that one." Scott said, pointing to the glider sailing away. "It's easy."

Scott led her into a storage shed to a row of nylon harnesses, picked one and said, "Here, this should fit." While Suzy tried on the harness, Scott walked outside with Katharine and quietly asked, "Anything I need to know about her?"
