The human cola machines.
I toured Vietnam during the sweltering hot summer of June
1995, and took a van from Hue, south to Ho Chi Minh city.
I never saw a mechanical soda machine in all of Vietnam. When
the van stopped at tourist stops such as mountain pass views,
before we could get out of the vehicle, children would crowd
the vehicle door and hold ice cold sodas to our sweaty necks.
We heard that these children could make more money in a day
selling foreigners a single can of ice-cold soda than their
parents made working all day in the rice paddies.
At one particular stop near China beach,
we asked the driver to park far away from the children who
were waiting for the van to stop. The children chased after
our van. I gave my camera to a fellow passenger, and when
the van stopped, I hopped out seconds before the children
arrived. They snapped the photo just as the human soda machines
arrived. They were very polite and friendly, just persistent
salesmen!
